Reaching new horizons - the Ofek Gifted and Talented program

Learning and Life at Scopus Monday, 21 Jun 2021

Ofek means ‘horizon’ in Hebrew, and is the name of our gifted and talented program.

Overseen by Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator, Ms Bernadette Sheedy, several new initiatives have begun in 2021, including the Maths Mentoring program involving highly able Years 11 and 12 students mentoring our gifted mathematicians in Years 7 to 10, teaching them a range of skills and problem solving strategies.

Chess Club takes place on Wednesday lunchtime and a professional facilitator has been teaching students tactics and maneuvers to improve their game.

The Enrichment and Enhancement Google Classroom has been established as a central place students can access information about programs and competitions. A range of opportunities across all subject areas include; the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards, the DaVinci Decathlon, the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee, and the Legacy Public Speaking Competition.

The Ofek Program will be officially launched in Semester 2, with further information regarding opportunities for students in the program.
